Neuroscience Research Intern

June - August 2019 • Annville Township, PA

What I liked

I had a great relationship with the other students in my lab and my lab instructor. Each day was an adventure and learning opportunity that would advance my knowledge of the field of biology, neuroscience, and overall research.

What I wish was different

I wish that the building was more accessible on weekends and off days. Locking the building on weekends made it difficult to complete important lab work in a timely manner.

Advice

Each person you meet could be an important networking companion. Be sure to reach out to professionals in your field of study; their knowledge and network could bring you opportunities that you would not have been able to find on your own.

Mathematical Physics Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Annville Township, PA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the small team environment and time spent with my mentor. He challenged us to learn new skills (Quantum computing, GAP, and much more) and then apply them practically through our research. I was appreciative of how hands-on the research was and had a great experience overall.

What I wish was different

Due to the nature of our research, it was very open-ended. Personally I found that discouraging at times as I didn't always know what our end goal was, however, it did allow for flexibility and exposure to different topics.

Advice

The saying, 'You get out what you put in', is really true. In addition, a lot of research is simply trying different ideas to solve a problem, and not getting discouraged when your first idea is wrong can go a long way.

Financial Aid Student Assistant

May 2018 • Annville Township, PA

What I liked

Although it was a challenge, I learned a lot about the financial aid process for college. I feel more prepared to handle my finances and knowledgeable enough to advise others how to handle their finances. I also gained a lot of customer service experience through walk-ins and phone conversations. I really like the colleagues in this office and their helpfulness as I learned about the financial aid process.

What I wish was different

I am not a fan of office/desk jobs so I wish I was able to be more active throughout the work day.

Advice

A new job may be stressful and challenging at first but you will adapt and start to feel more comfortable quickly. Learning to adapt quickly to new job pressures will be an important skill in the real world.

Advice

Independent research is a great way to learn about a specific scientific topic and a whole new way. It gives you a different perspective on that particular branch of science and is something you can intelligently discuss in an interview, hopefully impressing your potential employers.
